The karate player Yorgelis Salazar won the silver medal in the International Karate One Series A Tournament held in Salzburg, Austria, competing exceptionally in the -55 kg category, a division different from her usual weight.
The recent two-time South American champion had a remarkable career during the tournament, starting with an 8-0 victory against Taiwan's Yun Chen Tzu and then beating Senegalese Maimouna Niang 9-1.
He then dominated Ukraine's Valeriia Kovalova 9-0 to repeat a 2-0 quarter-final win against Japan's Ako Matsumura.
In the semifinals, she won a decisive Hansoku victory (4-5) against Azerbaijan's Madina Sadigova and gave up in the final of the category with a score of 2-4 to Slovakia's Nina Kvasnicova of Slovakia to win the silver medal.
Salazar added a demanding journey that included 17 fights played over a period of just three weeks, and demonstrated his versatility, technical mastery and competitive level against the best players in the world in this division.
After his performance, Salazar expressed his pride in reaching the podium in a different weight division.
“How crazy to be on this podium with the best in the world in this category! I am so proud, only I know how much I have sacrificed every day. Objectively speaking, not bad for my first time in this weight after so long,” he said.
In addition, the karate library thanked its team and sports institutions for their constant support.
“Thank God that it has kept me healthy and thank you all for your support, thank you to my club, the Venezuelan karate federation, minister Franklin Cardillo and everyone who works with me every day.”
With this result, Salazar closes an almost perfect performance and is getting ready for a well-deserved rest period before his next international commitments.
