World Health Organization prequalifies the first global vaccine against monkey pox

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that MVA-BN is the first monkey pox vaccine to be added to the prequalification list.

With this preclassification, the organization hopes that access to this product will be made easier for communities that need it urgently.

The Organization also reported that the prequalification evaluation is based on information submitted by the manufacturer Bavarian Nordic, and on the review of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the regulatory body for the vaccine.

In this regard, the Director General of WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, said that great progress has been made against monkey pox. However, a large deployment is needed for the world to have access to vaccines.

“We urgently need to increase acquisitions, donations and deployment to ensure equal access to vaccines wherever they are most needed, as well as the availability of other public health tools, so that we can prevent infections, stop transmission and save lives.”

The MVA-BN vaccine can be administered to people over 18 years of age in two doses, with an interval of 4 weeks. After prior cold storage, the vaccine can be stored at a temperature of between 2 and 8°C.
