The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) warned that 6.35 million Haitians will suffer from acute food insecurity between March and June 2027.
This dramatic figure represents an increase of more than 500,000 people compared to the equivalent period of 2026, an escalation driven by armed group violence, economic instability, low agricultural yield and the impact of the El Niño climate phenomenon.
The official report details that almost 2,000,000 inhabitants will be placed in Phase 4 of the Integrated Food Security Classification, corresponding to the category of nutritional emergency.
At this critical stage, families face extreme food shortages, high mortality rates and severe levels of malnutrition that force them to resort to desperate survival strategies to cover their basic needs.
The spiral of insecurity forced the internal displacement of more than 1.5 million people, who have had to leave their homes and traditional means of livelihood. The vast majority of refugees survive in makeshift camps characterized by poor hygiene and extreme overcrowding, depending on humanitarian aid to get at least one daily ration of food.
The director of the organization in the Caribbean nation, Lauren Landis, warned that constant mass displacements deepen the desperation of families who arrive in reception areas without any kind of belongings. The official emphasized the immediate need to combine emergency food assistance with long-term investments that allow agricultural communities to withstand climate and economic shocks.
