Every year on October 16, World Food Day is celebrated, proclaimed in 1979 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with the objective of raising public awareness of the food problem and strengthening solidarity in the fight against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
The day coincides with the founding date of FAO in 1945. For 1980, the General Assembly supported the observance of the day, considering that food is a requirement for the survival and well-being of humanity and a fundamental human need.
World Food Day was established by several countries belonging to FAO, at the general meeting of the organization held on November 20, 1979 by the Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food, Dr. Paul Romany, who suggested praising this day worldwide. Since then, more than 150 countries have been celebrating by publicizing the problems behind poverty and hunger.
Thanks to the Bolivarian Revolution, Venezuela has been recognized by FAO for guaranteeing food to the people and will continue to do so despite the coercive measures of the North American empire.
