A complaint from the organized Popular Power of the El Recreo parish in Caracas, related to a source of pollution in the vicinity of Plaza Venezuela, generated a cleaning operation led by representatives of the Popular Street Economy sector in this area of the city.

Reny Paruta, coordinator of Popular Street Economy of the Urban Control Directorate of the Mayor's Office of Caracas, reported that the complaint about the accumulation of garbage in the foothills of the Guaire River at the height of Plaza Venezuela triggered an investigation where it was found that the irresponsible management of waste by merchants in the area was related to this garbage dump.

“Upon verifying the complaint, the popular street economy, specifically those who live commercial lives on Lima Street and its surroundings, was called upon to eliminate this source of pollution and to raise awareness of the health risks posed by garbage,” he said.

Among the conclusions of this working day, Paruta highlighted the creation of differentiated routes for garbage collection so that one is responsible for residential solid waste and the other for garbage generated by merchants and Popular Street Economy.

It should be noted that this cleaning day lasted three days and was inspected by the mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez, who thanked the representatives of the Popular Street Economy for collaborating in the collection of solid waste and urged them to contribute in a more committed way to maintaining places close to their workplaces.

Andreina Díaz, spokesperson for the Plaza Venezuela Revolutionary and Popular Economy Community Council, reported that once they were aware of the main problems generated by representatives of the informal economy, they were invited to carry out a day of cleaning around the Guaire River.

As in other spaces in this parish, popular merchants dedicated themselves to collecting waste in order to contribute to the maintenance of these improperly used public spaces.

“We are sanctioned because bags, waste and organic waste were found in the foothills of the Guaire River, so we organized ourselves to change the appearance of this affected area because it is being used as a garbage dump,” stressed the spokeswoman for popular power.

Meanwhile, Jesús Ramírez, owner of a “Hot Dogs” car from this area, joined the group of popular merchants on Lima Street responsible for clearing the public space surrounding his workplace of garbage.

It also became known that between the Urban Control staff of the Mayor's Office of Caracas and the popular vendors in the area, they are carrying out an investigation to determine who threw this waste in that place.

In addition, once the garbage was collected, they were given a talk in order to raise awareness among the merchants who live around these public spaces.

In this regard, the solid waste collection route will be organized for the residential area, as well as for the popular economy with established schedules so that everyone is responsible for ensuring clean, safe space and accompanying the recovery process of this area.

This action highlights the joint effort of the People's Power and the parish's political team to recover with landscaping and afforestation and to maintain a beautiful, safe and victorious Caracas.
