Vicente Campo Elías was a hero of Venezuelan independence of Spanish origin, who died on March 17, 1814, after being seriously injured in the first Battle of San Mateo.

He was born in Spain in 1759, and arrived in Venezuela in 1791, where he dedicated himself to trade. In 1799, he was elected trustee of the Trujillo City Council. The following year, on a business trip, he resided in Mérida, where he married Martina Picón and González.

When the First Republic fell, the Province of Mérida was taken over by realists, so Campo Elías had to take refuge in the mountains of that region. However, once the Province was abandoned, he returns and joins the army of the Liberator Simon Bolivar.

Campo Elías distinguished himself in the battles of Niquitao and the Horcones, and later defeated José Tomas Boves in the fight against the Mosquito Nets.

Along with Bolívar, he participated in the Battle of Araure, and on February 3, 1814, he was overthrown by Boves in the battle of La Puerta, however, he intervened in due course in the Battle of Victory, which earned him his promotion to Colonel.

It is often said that Campo Elías joined the Republican cause out of love for his wife. Despite its Spanish origin, it was contrary to the system of domination, oppression and inequality established by the Spanish crown in America.
