This Sunday, September 22, the closing ceremony of the International Open Astronomy Olympics 2024 (AWAO) was held in the city of Sochi, Russia.

The young people of the National Scientific Seedbeds Program: Ivanna Madriz, Fabiola Martínez and Santiago Chacón received an honorable mention for their participation in the competition, in which 20 countries participated, the Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, reported through her Telegram channel.

The Venezuelan delegation, made up of six young people, participated in the online format from the headquarters of the Cantv in connection with the main venue of the event in the Sirius Federal Territory, Russia.

Ivanna Madriz, a native of the state of Mérida, stood out when she obtained the National Diamond mention for achieving the highest score in the Venezuelan delegation. This recognition positions it as one of the country's promises in the field of astronomy.

Venezuela, together with Qatar, was the nation with the highest number of honorable mentions at OWAO 2024, with a total of 3.

The closing ceremony was attended by leading figures from the Russian scientific and space field, such as Valery Nagnibeda, president of the jury and associate professor of the Department of Astrophysics at St. Petersburg State University, and the Russian cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka.

The International Open Astronomy Olympics, which brought together young astronomers and specialists from different countries, took place in four stages: Observation round, practice round, theoretical round and test round.

This participation in OWAO 2024 represents an important step in consolidating the academic training of new generations of Venezuelan astronomers.

The National Government, through the Great Mission of Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Humberto Fernández - Morán, supports these international competencies to ensure the training of boys, girls and young people in various areas of knowledge.
