The Minister of Popular Power for Communication and Information, Freddy Ñáñez, through his regular radio program Cable a Tierra, pointed out that while in the streets of Madrid, Spain, posters are displayed before the commemoration of October 12, which express “Neither genocidal nor slaveholder. They were heroes and saints”, in Venezuela there will be a mobilization with debate activities from a decolonial and intercultural perspective.

Ñáñez, said that what was written is a justification that “borders on absurdity in the face of the history that left written memory of what really happened in our continent with the arrival of the Spaniards” with the intention of defending the colonialist actions that murdered thousands of indigenous people.

He also stressed that it is important to remember that this October 12, “the colonization of a territory began that was destroyed by those who carry in one hand the flag of plurality, and in the other, genocide, extermination”, so President Nicolás Maduro has declared that this date is not a celebration, on the contrary, “for us it is the sign of resistance, of life over death, of freedom over slavery and against the monarchy”.

Since the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution, October 12 has been a day of reflection for indigenous peoples. In 25 years, the original traditions and expressions have been made visible after the time of European domination. With the Constitution of the Republic, the 31 languages spoken by the 44 indigenous peoples are recognized, which translates into an advance in the recognition of indigenous peoples. That is why the Guaicaipura Mission and the Ministry of Popular Power for Indigenous Peoples were created, which advances in the location of the original peoples, and from there, policies were established according to the needs of this sector of the population.
