The Executive Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) met this Friday, March 29 in Thailand, where it designated Venezuela to host the World Qualifying Championship for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, and also chose Armenia for the same event in 2027 and Argentina for the World Youth Championship in 2026.

The information was released in a press release, published on the website of the Ministry of People's Power for Youth and Sports, in which he noted that the president of the IWF, Mohammed Jalood, after the vote of the Executive Board of this instance, said that “we had two very interesting and professional candidates for our World Championships, so naturally we opted for this double prize”.

“This also brings more stability to our calendar and allows more time to prepare and successfully deliver two major competitions. After Ningbo, in China, we traveled to Europe in 2027 and to the Americas in 2028, three successive World Championships on three different continents,” he stressed.

In the framework of the Venezuela 2023 Olympic Weightlifting Championship, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mervin Maldonado and the president of the IWF, Mohammed Jalood, held a meeting to propose that Venezuela be the venue for major world events since the necessary conditions are in place.

Venezuela will open its doors in 2028 to more than 120 countries and 1200 athletes from the senior category who will be present at the World Qualifying Championships for the Los Angeles Olympic Games.
