Venezuela will hold the vice-presidency of the UNESCO Bioethics Commission

Venezuela will hold the Vice-Presidency of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), for the period 2024-2026, the Ministry of Science and Technology said in a press release.

In this regard, the above-mentioned text explained that the Permanent Delegation of Venezuela to UNESCO confirmed that the Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez Ramírez, will be at the head of this task.

“Venezuela assumes this responsibility in the person of our Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, at a time when new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, nanotechnology, robotics and neurotechnology represent a great leap for humanity with implications that are still unknown,” they wrote on their account on the social network Instagram.

Among the new tasks that the nation will have since the vice-presidency of the CIBG are: following up on the universal declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, as well as recommendations on the ethics of Artificial Intelligence; drafting a UNESCO recommendation for ethics in neurotechnology and the protection of the identity, integrity and human rights of the population that will be subject to this new technology, especially people with disabilities.

During the presentation of the 2023 National Science, Technology and Innovation Awards, held at the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base, in the state of Miranda, the also sector vice-president of Science, Technology, Education and Health, Gabriela Jiménez Ramírez, valued this news, stating that it is a recognition of Venezuelan scientists and scientists.

“It is an exercise of recognition, to you, to the scientists who are from laboratories, universities, from spaces, communities, doing popular science and also the necessary science, and day by day also doing the necessary technology,” he said.

The UNESCO Bioethics Commission is an intergovernmental body responsible for promoting dialogue between Member States on ethical issues related to life sciences and their applications. It is composed of 36 independent experts appointed by the Director General of UNESCO.
