At the first plenary meeting of the year 2025, Venezuela was elected, by acclamation, as president of the Group of Friends of Persons with Disabilities for the fields of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The election process included the appointment of the Bureau of the above-mentioned Group, composed of five co-chairs representing the Organization's Regional Groups: Turkey, Belarus, Venezuela, China and Nigeria, representing groups I, II, III, IV and V, respectively.
Subsequently, the Cuban delegation proposed to Venezuela for the presidency, because of its leadership and the initiative that gave rise to the GOFD.
In his proposal, he stated that “Venezuela was the country that originally promoted the initiative, it has done so very successfully and has managed to bring together a large group of delegations that have joined from different geographical areas.”
The proposal was unanimously approved, with the objective of consolidating Venezuela's role as a reference in the defense of the rights of people with disabilities and in building a more inclusive society in the areas of UNESCO.
