Venezuela's ecosocialist policy is an example to the world in ecological biodiversity and protection of the planet, said the Minister of Popular Power for Ecosocialism, Nelson Rodríguez, during his speech at the second meeting of the High-Level Segment of COP 17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in Armenia.
In this context, Rodríguez denounced that the production model that commodifies nature has exacerbated the multidimensional environmental crisis, and rejected the use of biodiversity as a commodity or instrument of geopolitical pressure.
The minister called for inclusive, fair and respectful environmental multilateralism, he reported on his website Venezolana de Televisión.
He emphasized that Venezuela is one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world where more than 20,000 species of flora, five thousand of fauna and nearly 150,000 insects are home to, protected by the National Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Biodiversity 2024-2030.
In terms of wildlife conservation, he highlighted achievements in the protection of threatened species, with the release of more than 12,000 specimens of the Orinoco caiman and programs dedicated to freshwater and marine turtles.
He also mentioned projects aimed at the preservation of the frontine bear, the cardinal bear and the Andean condor and the National Program for Ecological Reforestation in Cuencas, which has exceeded 69,000 hectares covered.
On the other hand, within the framework of international agreements, the Venezuelan delegation emphasized that Areas Under Special Management Regime (ABRAE) represent 67.52% of the national territory, of which 31.7% qualify under the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
This achievement places the country above the global goals established for the year 2030 in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The Venezuelan representation urged developed nations to meet their funding commitments under the agreement and demanded that the genetic resource sequencing mechanism be operational.
