The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Yván Gil, urged the international community this Tuesday to urgently create an action plan to protect biodiversity, due to the vertiginous acceleration of climate change, as a result of uncontrolled human activity.
“We are confronted with two great visions or two models, a model of exploitation, of domination, inherited from imperialism, of extractivist colonialism, such as capitalism, and a model of survival, which is that of our peoples,” he lamented during his speech at the 16th United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16), which takes place in Cali, capital of the department of Valle del Cauca in Colombia.
In his speech, the diplomat referred to the fight that must be waged against the developmental model of capitalist countries that destroys Pachamama and pushes developing nations to bear the greatest burden in fulfilling biodiversity conservation objectives, considering that responsibilities are differentiated and disproportionate.
Venezuela has always recognized the protection of biodiversity as a crucial element for survival on Earth and is aware that, based on the decisions taken today, the path that future generations must follow will be traced to build an inclusive, sustainable, sustainable and equitable system for all, with transformation being a decisive line for its realization.
“If we don't transform, if we don't make radical changes in decisions, in life, in the way we relate, surely in two years we will find ourselves in this same situation again, regretting and resorting again to the speeches, to the rhetoric, to the evaluation, to the diagnosis that we have already made and which has been quite detailed,” explained the Venezuelan Foreign Minister.
For Caracas, it is not only important to increase the synergy between the three Rio Conventions, which focus on Climate Change, Biological Diversity and Desertification, but also to remain committed to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the Convention on Biological Diversity and all those pacts that guarantee a world in which life is respected and preserved.
On behalf of the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan diplomat assured that, in the current global socio-economic situation, it will be true multilateralism and economic-financial assistance to the countries most affected by the loss of biodiversity, which will make it possible to move forward.
