Venezuela presented the National Assembly (AN)'s progress in environmental containment during its participation in the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) of the United Nations (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity, which is being held in Yerevan, Armenia.
The delegation of the Venezuelan chapter of the Amazon Parliament (Parlamaz-Vzla), composed of deputies Oliver Rivas and Maigualida Barrera, reported that among the achievements presented, the approval of international agreements and the key aspects of the Organic Law on Mines stand out. Rivas explained that these regulations have seven articles related to the preservation of the environment and the prohibition of the use of mercury, according to a press release from the AN.
The parliamentarian highlighted the relevance of the Amazon region to face the global climate crisis. “Protecting this region means safeguarding the indigenous peoples that inhabit it, as well as preserving its immense natural wealth,” Rivas said. In addition, he mentioned that the conservation effort encompasses the comprehensive defense of flora, wildlife and endemic ecosystem species.
During their speech, the Venezuelan representation participated in the working table focused on biological diversity and programs for sustainable forest use. The COP17, which brings together representatives from 196 countries under the slogan “Act for nature”, evaluates for the first time progress towards the conservation goals established for the year 2030.
