Venezuela congratulates Anura Kumara Dissanayake after being elected president of Sri Lanka

The Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, through his Telegram channel, congratulated the leader and candidate of the National People's Power (NPP), Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who was elected president of Sri Lanka.

“We congratulate Anura Kumara Dissanayake after her election as president of Sri Lanka from Venezuela, we send a supportive embrace to the elected president and his people, confirming our will to advance in relations of friendship and cooperation with mutual benefit,” wrote the Venezuelan foreign minister.

Dissanayake, 55, won the presidency with 42.31 percent of the votes counted in the elections that included 38 candidates for the highest office.

Its closest contender was opposition leader Sajith Premadasa with 32.76 percent, while current president Ranil Wickremesinghe came in third place with 17.27 percentage points of the ballots.

The definition of the results came after a second count of the votes obtained by Dissanayake and Premadasa, who led the preferences.
