On the occasion of the commemoration of the 254th anniversary of the birth of General Alexandre Sabés Pétion, a distinguished independence revolutionary and the first president of the Republic of Haiti, the island's accredited ambassador to Venezuela, Leslie David, presented a floral offering to the bust of this distinguished Haitian soldier and politician.

The solemn ceremony took place in Alexandre Pétion Square, located in the parish of El Paraíso — Caracas, and was attended by the Deputy Minister for the Caribbean, Raul Li Causi, and other representatives of the Haitian diplomatic corps.

Alexandre Pétion was born on April 2, 1770, in the city of Port-au-Prince, and his fighting character made him the leader of the independence cause of Haiti and the first president of this Caribbean nation.

His mettle and heroic deeds served as an impetus for the Liberator Simon Bolivar, who after the fall of the Second Republic, went into exile in Jamaica from where he was called by Pétion to attend Haitian territory, where he informed him of his decision to support the South American cause on the condition that the abolition of slavery be decreed.
