This Wednesday, it was announced that if he wins the electoral contest in November, it is unlikely that Donald Trump will choose to withdraw the United States (US) from the North Atlantic Organization (NATO), despite his repeated threats to do so.

However, that does not mean that the military block remains intact, as detailed by Russia Today (RT), citing former security officials and defense experts who worked under the Trump presidency and who could be part of his new team.

If Trump manages to return to the White House, the Republican leader would not only expect European countries to meet the repeated demands he made in his previous term, to increase their share of NATO spending, but he would implement a “radical reorientation” of that Alliance, revealed Dan Caldwell, a defense expert familiar with the thinking of Trump's advisors on national security.

The change they foresee represents a “significant reduction in the role of the United States in European security”. Thus, he would go from being the main supplier of combative power in the continent to becoming “someone who provides support only in times of crisis,” Caldwell said.

Another part of Trump's plan is to have a two-tier NATO, which suggests that member countries that do not meet the level of military spending equivalent to 2% of GDP “would not enjoy the defensive generosity or security guarantees of the United States.”
