A court in the state of New Mexico, United States (USA), issued a historic ruling ordering the technology corporation Meta, parent of platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, to cancel the sum of 25 billion dollars after determining that it provided false information to the public regarding the protection of their personal data.

According to information highlighted by Radio Miraflores, the court ruling issued this Wednesday by Judge Francis Mathew indicates that the company repeatedly engaged in misleading practices regarding the levels of security and privacy guaranteed to users, violating the consumer protection regulations in force in that U.S. jurisdiction.

The legal process showed that the data processing policies applied by the technological conglomerate did not correspond to the guarantees disseminated in its public campaigns, which resulted in the unauthorized exposure of private information and the commercialization of profiles without the express consent of citizens.

This economic sanction represents an unparalleled judicial precedent against large Silicon Valley corporations, while various digital rights organizations and consumer advocates emphasize the need to tighten global regulations to prevent the arbitrary use of personal information on social networks.
