The Israeli group NSO, manufacturer of Pegasus spyware, was held responsible for computer piracy and breach of contract, by a court in California, United States (USA).
Oakland District Judge Phyllis Hamilton accepted a motion introduced by the messaging platform Whatsapp, which accuses the company of accessing its servers without permission to install Pegasus on the mobile devices of around 1400 victims of espionage, including journalists, human rights activists and dissidents.
The director of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, highlighted on social networks that the ruling is a victory for privacy. “We spent five years making our case because we firmly believe that spyware companies cannot hide behind immunity or avoid responsibility for their illegal actions,” he said.
