The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) recognized
the work of Palestinian journalists working in the Gaza Strip, by
awarding them this Thursday the 2024 World Press Freedom Prize.
According to the director of the organization, Audrey
Azoulay, this award pays tribute to their “exceptional courage” in the
face of “difficult and dangerous circumstances”, and highlights the
crucial work that these professionals do in reporting on the devastating
humanitarian crisis that has been plaguing the Palestinian territory for almost seven months, where the conflict in which the largest number of journalists have been killed in less than a year
is taking place.
“In these
times of darkness and despair, we want to send a strong message of
solidarity and recognition to the Palestinian journalists who are covering
this crisis under such dramatic circumstances,” said the
international jury, chaired by Chilean Mauricio Weibel.
Covering the
conflict in Gaza has taken an incalculable human toll on journalists.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ),
at least 97 reporters - mostly Palestinians (92) - have been killed
since Israel began the attacks in October 2023.
