Nearly 70% of those killed in Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip are women and minors, according to a report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released this Friday.
“The UN Human Rights Office has been verifying the personal data of people killed in Gaza as a result of attacks, bombings and other hostilities. Until now, it has detected that nearly 70% of these deaths were children and women, which indicates a systematic violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law,” the statement said.
The continuous attacks against the civilian population, according to the text, “show an apparent indifference to the death of civilians and the impact of selected means and methods of warfare.”
Sputnik, citing the statement, highlighted that around 80% of the verified deaths, the note continues, took place in residential buildings or homes, of which 44% were minors and 26% were women.
Data from the entity show that the high number of fatalities in attacks is mainly explained by “the use by the Israel Defense Forces of weapons with a wide impact zone in densely populated areas”. However, the statement notes, several deaths may have been the result of a failure following the firing of projectiles by Palestinian armed groups.
The report provides a detailed analysis of violations covering the period between November 2023 and April 2024 and examines the killings of civilians and violations of international law that “in many cases could constitute war crimes”.
