The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk condemn Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip that have left 400 Palestinians for the time and have injured several hundred others.
In a statement and in statements to the press, Guterres expressed his shock at the bombings and made a strong call for the ceasefire to be respected, humanitarian aid to be restored unimpeded and the remaining hostages released unconditionally.
The UN Secretary General expressed horror at the latest Israeli attacks on Gaza, stating that this new onslaught “will add tragedy to tragedy”.
For his part, Volker Türk, recalled that the last 18 months of violence have demonstrated that there is no military solution to the crisis and urged Israel to stop its military operations, insisting that the continued use of force will only aggravate the suffering of the Palestinians, who are already facing catastrophic conditions.
Türk demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and people arbitrarily detained, stressing that the war must end once and for all. He also called on all parties with influence to promote peace and avoid greater civil suffering.
