This Monday, the United Nations Security Council demanded a truce in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, this being the first request to stop the fighting. At the time of the vote, the United States (USA) abstained from the resolution.

The request also called for the release of all hostages taken during the surprise attack by Hamas on October 7 in southern Israel. The measure does not link that demand to the ceasefire during Ramadan, which ends on April 9.

The vote comes after the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China vetoed a US-sponsored resolution on Friday that would have supported “an immediate and sustained ceasefire” in the Israeli-Hamas conflict.

The US warned that the resolution passed on Monday could harm negotiations to stop hostilities between its government, Egypt and Qatar, raising the possibility of another veto by the Americans.
