The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, made an urgent appeal this Tuesday to the governments of the United States and the Russian Federation to establish negotiations aimed at drafting a new atomic arms control treaty, warning that the current geopolitical situation represents the most dangerous nuclear scenario recorded since the end of the Cold War.

During a high-level session held at the headquarters of the multilateral organization, the Portuguese diplomat warned about global institutional vulnerability after the expiration of the bilateral START III agreement, pointing out that for the first time in more than half a century there are no binding legal limits on the strategic arsenals of the main powers. “The increase in risks and the collapse of safeguards are a one-way ticket to disaster,” Guterres said, basing the urgency of resuming bilateral dialogue.

In addition, the highest authority of the UN urged Washington and Moscow to stop any attempt to reactivate military competition, recalling the devastating impact of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as historical testimony to the destructive danger posed by the use of this technology. “For more than eight decades, humanity has lived under the nuclear threat; the shadow is darkening. Let's make sure that future generations get rid of it and we choose a future without nuclear weapons,” emphasized the senior international official.

The General Secretariat's proposal seeks to consolidate renewed mechanisms of trust and multilateral transparency, promoting gradual disarmament and the total eradication of arsenals of mass destruction to preserve operational stability and planetary peace.
