The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, assured this Sunday that the agency will remain in southern Lebanon despite the warnings of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that the blue helmets should be removed from the fighting zone.

Guterres said that despite the attacks, the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) will remain in its positions and that the agency's flag continues to fly in the area.

The senior UN official also insisted that the security and integrity of UNIFIL personnel must be guaranteed at all times and without reservation the inviolability of the multilateral organization.

António Guterres' statements come after Benjamin Netanyahu asked him to remove the blue helmets from southern Lebanon.

In a speech to the Israeli people, Netanyahu accused the UN mission of acting as “human shields” for Hezbollah.
