Expert rapporteurs of the United Nations (UN), through a statement released by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, urge all countries to recognize Palestine as a State for peace in the area and, by extension, in Western Asia.

“All countries should follow the example of the 146 UN member states, recognize the State of Palestine and use all available political and diplomatic options to ensure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” say UN experts.

The rapporteurs point out that the recognition of a Palestinian State, “of the rights of the Palestinian people, of their struggles and suffering for freedom and independence” is a necessary condition for achieving lasting peace in Palestine and throughout Western Asia.

The statement also highlights satisfaction with the measures taken by Norway, Ireland and Spain in favor of Palestine, saying that, although the prospects for sustainable peace and the end of the occupation have been uncertain since the signing of the Oslo Accords 30 years ago, a political solution is becoming an impossible reality.
