UN approves new resolution favorable to Palestine by an overwhelming majority

The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) approved a resolution this Friday in which it recommends that the Security Council reconsider the accession of Palestine as a full member of the multilateral body.

With the vote of 143 countries in favor, 25 abstentions and 9 against (Argentina, Croatia, United States, Israel, Hungary, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Nauru and Palau), the document was approved to reiterate the world's call for the recognition of the rights of the Palestinian people.

Through his account on the social network X, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, stressed that the resolution was adopted by the “vast majority of member States”, to “request the Security Council to incorporate Palestine as a full member, it is a worldwide outcry. The world demands a free and sovereign Palestine!” , he emphasized.

The adopted resolution “determines that the State of Palestine (...) must, therefore, be admitted as a member” and “recommends that the Security Council reconsider the issue favourably”.

The document is non-binding, and does not grant Palestine the status of a full member of the UN, but simply “recognizes it as qualified” to be part of the international organization.

While the General Assembly alone cannot grant full UN membership status, the draft resolution will grant Palestine some additional rights and privileges as of September 2024 — such as a seat among UN members in the Assembly Hall — but it will not be granted the right to vote.
