“THE PARAGUAIPOA MASSACRE”

(THE NEW COUNTRY, 13 OCTOBER 1992)

  • On Monday, October 12, 1992, in the midst of the celebration of the “Fifth Centenary of the Discovery of America”, Carlos Andrés Pérez's bodyguards, while he was inaugurating a hospital, carried out a massacre that evoked the genocide begun by the Spanish conquest in 1492.
  • Journalists and cameramen who witnessed the massacre said that the vehicle was already stopped when the Presidential Guard intercepted it and strafed it.
  • What President Pérez considered to be “a regrettable act of drunkenness” turned out to be another crime added to the long list in his record as police minister and exterminator agent of the Venezuelan left, in the service of the CIA.
  • According to the then Minister of Internal Relations, Luis Piñerúa, Pérez had already left the area when Presidential Guard escorts strafed a truck, killing the driver and two passengers.
  • However, two days later, President Pérez contradicted his own minister's version, stating that he was indeed present when the massacre occurred.
  • He also stated that the massacre was justified because the driver shot down by his escorts was drunk and violated land traffic regulations.
  • Two other people, who had nothing to do with the incident, were also shot down, including a nurse from the newly opened Binational Hospital of Paraguaipoa.
  • The “accident”, as Piñerúa described it, caused three deaths and seven children injured by gunshots.
  • The government did not give the names of the officials who killed or wounded citizens.
  • The news of this massacre went around the world in the distorted version of an alleged attack that was later described as an “accident”. At every event, it was a matter of covering up a president, a close friend of Felipe González, whose political fall was imminent.
  • El País de España reported: “It was simply an accident caused by a drunk driver out of the joy of the 5th Centenary holiday.”
  • Therefore, the Wayú Indians machine-gunned by the escorts were well massacred, because they were drunk with joy for the favors received, during a genocide and looting that lasted 300 years.
