This Sunday, February 11, at the Church of Our Lady of Carmen, in the municipality of El Callao, Bolivar state, the traditional Misa de las Madamas was held.

According to information from Venezolana de Televisión, the religious celebration was attended by more than 250 madamas together with local and regional authorities.

This meeting, which is part of the Carnivals of El Callao, is the religious celebration prior to the beginning of Lent, which will be on Wednesday of next week.

For his part, the governor of the entity, Ángel Marcan o, said that carnival is the most traditional festival in the entity.

“The carnival that began on Friday in Ciudad Bolivar, with the Ruta del Calipso, was on Saturday in Upata, and today in El Callao, with the tour with the Madamas,” he said and highlighted that more than 30,000 people came to the town to celebrate the festivities.

In addition, the mayor, Sergio Hernández, stressed that the ceremony was attended by “a united people committed to renewing their faith and hope, in an atmosphere of joy”.

The traditional Misa de las Madamas began in 1986, when a group of people belonging to the Association of Friends of Calypso approached priest Ramón Fajardo Tapi to pray for the health of Isidora Agnes, “La Negra Isidora”, who in life was a social fighter and promoter of popular culture, who instituted the tradition of calypso as an Afro-Caribbean musical genre in Venezuelan lands.
