THE TÁCHIRA MASSACRE

  • When they were identified as suspected guerrilla fighters, four students were massacred. They were shot with shotguns, shot and stabbed to death. (CLARÍN and EL NACIONAL, 25, 26 and 27 January 1963)
  • In San Cristóbal, students Ramón Rafael Pacheco Pacheco, 15, and Guido Maggi Santander, 20, were buried as suspected guerrilla fighters by the pawn of a farm on the outskirts of that Andean city.
  • On the occasion of the suspension of school activities, the four young people went on an excursion to the Capachito area, where they were mistaken for guerrilla fighters and killed.
  • César Darío González, 15, managed to survive after being transferred to the University Clinical Hospital of Caracas to treat a severe spinal injury that left him with disabilities in both legs.
  • The four students were in their 4th and 5th year of high school.
  • On January 23 of that year, there were widespread protests and riots across the country, which were suppressed by the security organs of the government of Romulo Betancourt.
  • That same day in Caracas, during the raids carried out by police authorities in Catia on the blocks of Lomas de Urdaneta, Propatria and 23 de Enero, 54 demonstrators were shot and injured:

  3. Ramón Isidro Álvarez (7 years old),
  4. Rosa Espinoza Hernández (12 years old),
  5. Luis Enrique Arcila (18 years old),

  7. White Queen (10 years old),
  8. Hugo Blanco (5 years old),
  9. Juan Barrios (14 years old),
  10. Efraín Hernández (17 years old),
  11. Cándida Celestina Célis (22 years old),
  12. Manuel Urbina (21 years old),
  13. Víctor Marcano (17 years old),
  14. Pedro Maneiro (23 years old),
  15. Ambrosio Álvarez (19 years old) and
  16. Carlos Luiggi (21 years old)... among others.
