The number of deaths due to a large earthquake in Japan is on the rise

The death toll from an earthquake of magnitude 7.6, which shook the west coast of Japan at the beginning of the New Year, rose to 48, according to the authorities of the prefecture of Ishikawa, quoted by the television channel 'NHK'.

According to reports, by 3:30 p.m. (GMT+9), 20 fatalities were confirmed in the city of Suzu; 19 in Wajima; 5 in Nanao; 2 in Anamizu; one in Hakui; and one in Shiga, after the earthquake that occurred on the Noto Peninsula, on the western coast of Japan.

This was the strongest earthquake since records began in 1885, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Initially, tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas in five prefectures, but the waves did not reach the height that was feared.
