THE MASSACRES OF SAN CRISTÓBAL, LOMAS DE URDANETA, LA PASTORA, CATIA AND THE “23RD OF JANUARY” 25 DEAD AND 104 INJURED (CLARÍN, EL NACIONAL and ÚLTIMAS NOTICIAS, January 21 to 24, 1962)

  • On January 21, 1962, in San Cristóbal, 3 people were killed with rifles during the transportation strike called to protest against the new Civil Liability Insurance Act, which without prior consultation with transport unions was imposed to favor economic groups.
  • In San Cristóbal, the victims were a boy, a lady and a man who were shot by members of the National Guard and the police of that entity. There were 170 arrested.
  • This local strike took on a national character and spread throughout Venezuela, read: Caracas, Acarigua, Maracaibo and La Guaira, where state security forces opened fire on the demonstrators.
  • In Caracas, in the Lomas de Urdaneta sectors, on January 23, Catia, Lídice and La Pastora, police action left a total of 20 dead and 74 injured.
  • The list of the following victims of police violence was published at the emergency post in Catia: Ana Lourdes Pacheco, Aníbal José Jiménez, Simón Hortaja, Isaac Luigi, Cástor Carballo, Justo Camacho, José Ortiz, Simón Rafael Cahualga, Carlota de Ochoa, Pablo Guillermo Rodríguez, José Gustavo Quiroz, Rey Miguel Arvieca and Francisco Osorio Magallanes.
  • In La Pastora, Isaac Rafael Velásquez Luy was shot dead by National Guard agents in the occipital region.
  • Early in the morning, in Lídice, Martín Palacios, 15, was shot dead while on the roof of block 57.
  • Late at night, Elías David la Rosa, 18, was shot dead by police officers while trying to board a bus on the Santa Teresa-El Cementerio route.
  • Another of the victims in Caracas was the young 5th year high school student, Ramón Augusto Guevara Solórzano, who was shot by Digepol agents near the New Circus.
  • During the riots in La Guaira, Digepol agents murdered 19-year-old student Tiburcio Orta, who was an AD youth leader and nephew of the Secretary General of that party in that town.
  • In Acarigua, that. In Portuguese, there were clashes between demonstrators and the authorities at the start of the transport strike.
  • In front of the Curpa Cinema, in Acarigua, Digepol agents caused the death of Ernesto Álvarez, 27, and seriously injured Antonio Pérez del Moral and Rafael Ponte, 26 people were arrested.
