On January 2, 1983, the Caracas Metro began operations with the first stage of Line 1 from Propatria to La Hoyada, with eight stations.
The starting time was 10:00 a.m., until 4:00 p.m. That same year, the Operations Control Center building, begun in 1979, was completed, located in La Hoyada.
In March 1983, the La Hoyada-Chacaíto section was inaugurated, with six more stations. On May 30, the schedule is established from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., from Monday to Saturday, and on November 9, the operating hours are extended to Sunday.
The laying of rails in the Patio de Las Adjuntas, on Line 2 Caricuao- El Silencio, began in 1984.
In 1985, the Executive Management of Surface Transportation was created with the main function of ensuring the provision of public transport on the surface in a safe, efficient and comfortable manner by planning, organizing, managing and controlling the operation of the system called Metrobús.
In January of that same year, construction began on the second section of Line 1 Chacaíto - Los Dos Caminos and the expropriation and demolition of buildings on the La Paz -El Silencio section of Line 2. On October 4, 1987, the first stage of Line 2, Las Adjuntas- Zoo- La Paz, began operating, with 16.3 kilometers of railway network and 9 stations.

While the difficult underground works of Line 2 were being carried out, the Metro created a surface transportation system, so that thousands of users from the Caricuao and Las Adjuntas parishes, could continue their journey to connect with Line 1. In the following years, the Metro continued its expansion to completely complete the 20.36 kilometers of Line 1, with the Los Dos Caminos-Palo Verde section, inaugurated on November 19 1989. The progress did not stop and the Metro expanded to the southern part of the city; on December 18, 1994, the Plaza Venezuela-El Valle section of Line 3 came into operation. On July 18, 2006, Line 4, the Capuchinos-Zona Rental section, was inaugurated and on October 15 of that same year, the first phase of the second section of Line 3, El Valle-La Rinconada, began commercial operation. The second phase opened on January 9, 2010, including three new stations: Jardines, Coche and Mercado, within the Plaza Venezuela-La Rinconada section.
Line 5 is under construction, however, in 2015 the Bello Monte station was inaugurated, which connects to Line 4 in the Rental Zone.
Currently, the network that makes up the underground system is approximately 70 kilometers long and has 51 stations, which mobilize more than 2,800,000 users daily.
