On June 12, 1917, the most prolific pianist in Latin America during the 19th and 20th centuries, María Teresa Gertrudis de Jesús Carreño García, died, to whom the people pay tribute for raising the name of Venezuela in the world, through her great artistic and cultural talent.

Born in Caracas on December 22, 1853, Teresa Carreño performed throughout her life in the best theaters in Europe, America, Africa and Australia, with a repertoire of classical pieces by renowned international teachers. In addition, she was the author of more than 40 piano creations, such as Teresita's Waltz, Hymn to Bolivar, Saludo a Caracas, The False Note and Nocturnos.

For more than half a century, this prominent Venezuelan artist, daughter of Manuel Antonio Carreño -nephew of Simón Rodríguez - and Clorinda García Sena y Toro -niece of Liberator Simón Bolívar's wife-, was in contact with the most important musicians and personalities of her time and took her art to many parts of the world.

In 1917, after a successful concert in Cuba with the Havana Philharmonic, his health was broken, so he returned to New York, where he died on June 12, 1917, at the age of 63. His ashes were brought to Venezuela in 1938 and, since December 9, 1977, they have been resting in the National Pantheon.

In his honor, the main cultural complex in Caracas bears his name, a space that now in Revolution all the Venezuelan people have access to, to enjoy performing arts and family entertainment.
