The international multiplatform TELESUR rejected on Monday the decision of the Government of Argentina, headed by Javier Milei, to eliminate its signal on Open Digital Television (TDA), which it described as a “serious attack on the right to information”.

In a statement, TELESUR said that curtailing the television station undermines “the possibility of holding informed opinions and of actively participating in public debate.”

TELESUR believes that the decision of the Milei government is based on the “chainsaw” law that mutilated retirees and pensions and cut public salaries and increased poverty.

“Now there is a deafening knock against freedom of expression and the plurality of voices, which paves a worrying setback,” the document says.

The media also recalled that in the Mauricio Macri government they also wanted to apply the same method of eliminating the TDA signal, but the channel “never left”, stressing that “they won't succeed now either”.

“Our platform will continue to build a harmony of voices through its various channels and platform,” the text highlights.

The Argentine government decided to remove the TELESUR channel from the TDA programming grid as of July 1, 2024, a measure that was communicated through a document letter sent by the controller of Public TV, Diego Chaher. The press release refers to the option provided for in Article 2.2 of the Collaboration Agreement signed on November 20, 2020.
