This Monday, the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, warned that the world is not ready for another pandemic.

“And yes, there will be a next time. History teaches us that the next pandemic is a question of when, not if it will happen. It can be caused by an influenza virus or a new coronavirus, or it can be caused by a new pathogen that we don't know yet, what we call Disease X,” he said.

In this regard, he indicated that the lessons about COVID-19 are at risk of being forgotten because “attention is focused on the many other crises facing our world.”

As published by the RT web portal, the health official explained that “COVID-19 was Disease X: a new pathogen that caused a new disease. But there will be another Disease X, or Disease Y or Disease Z. And as things stand, the world is still not ready for the next Disease X and the next pandemic.”
