Hundreds of public education workers participated this Wednesday in a protest march through the streets of Madrid, on the opening day of an indefinite teaching strike called to demand job improvements and a budgetary increase in the region's education sector.
According to information reported by the TASS agency, the mobilization toured the Spanish capital until it converged at Puerta del Sol, where a protest camp against the housing crisis also converges, concentrating the demands of the popular sectors in the face of the regional government's precarious policies.
Among the central demands of the teaching profession, the immediate reduction in classroom enrollment, the increase in state investment in public schools and the guarantee of decent working conditions for teachers stand out, in the face of the progressive deterioration caused by budget cuts in the Community of Madrid.
The days of protest included street actions in various academic centers, including a rally at the Complutense University of Madrid that was the subject of police intervention with five people arrested, evidencing the increase in social tensions in the European nation.
