Takeover of Carúpano: Beginning of the revolutionary counteroffensive that swept the Spanish Empire

On June 1, 1816, the patriotic forces led by the Liberator Simon Bolivar carried out the Taking of Carúpano, a libertarian feat that marked the beginning of the revolutionary counteroffensive that would sweep South American lands to the Spanish Empire.

After setting sail on May 25 from Margarita Island as part of the Keys Expedition, the independence fighters arrived on the shores of the city of Carúpano, where they faced realistic forces that attacked with cannons the liberation fleet that managed to dock on a beach near Fort Santa Rosa.

The coordinated action so that while the royalists were turning their attention to the heights, on the left flank the patriot forces under the command of General Manuel Piar and Colonel Carlos Soublette, managed to take the fort in a battle that lasted about two hours without loss among the patriots.

208 years after this feat that gave way to the new victorious phase of the Independence Revolution, the people raise the flags of the men and women who, with rebellion, courage and dignity, undertook this action that today is an emblem of the inhabitants of this land and their anti-imperialist spirit.
