Nearly a thousand university students mobilized this Wednesday in Tirana, the capital of Albania, to protest in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Education against the precarious education system, the high cost of tuition and the lack of job opportunities for youth.
According to information highlighted in Telesur, the demonstrations have been accompanied by a strong deployment of state security forces, who used tear gas and water cannons against the crowd that tried to tear down the protective fences of the government building.
The student protests are part of the so-called "Flamingo Revolution “, a social movement started in May to prevent the delivery of an important wetland in the south of the country to private tourism projects linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
Faced with the increase in social tension, the delegation of the European Union in Albania expressed concern about the course of events and urged local authorities to maintain police action proportional to the demands of the mobilized population.
