  • Sonia Ordóñez Cárdenas (18 years old) was in her fourth year of high school at the Fermín Toro High School. The student lived in a house located on Aveledo Street, Los Arbolitos neighborhood, near the former headquarters of the Ministry of Defense in La Planicie.
  • He was shot in the chest as he descended from a minibus. The shooting was fired by DISIP motorized vehicles during the riots at the Manuel Palacio Fajardo High School, in the Sierra Maestra sector on January 23.
  • A day later, the city of Trujillo was shocked by the death of the engineering student at the University of Los Andes (ULA), Johnny Matos Villarroel, 21.
  • The student from Trujillo was killed by police officers who raided the nucleus of the ULA.

The Context:

  • Throwing the army into the streets was the response of the reactionary government of Jaime Lusinchi, to contain the student protest. This resulted in the death of Sonia Ordoñez Cárdenas in Caracas and Johnny Matos Villarroel in Trujillo.
  • In the cities of Caracas, Valencia, Maracay Mérida and Trujillo, students held several demonstrations against the measures of the Ministry of Education that intended to extend the school year until September. He was Minister of Internal Relations, José Ángel Ciliberto, the executing arm of the repression.
  • At that time, a complaint was registered against Ciliberto and the Private Secretary of the President of the Republic, Blanca Ibáñez, for the illegal purchase of 100 Jeeps, charged with the secret game, which were intended for the private use of family members from the presidential environment and regional militants of the AD party.
  • The refinancing of foreign debt under Leonine conditions for Venezuela, the deaths of Sonia Ordoñez Cárdenas and Johnny Matos Villarroel, and the massacres of El Amparo (8-10-88) and Yumare (8-5-1986), are just a small example of the impunity sponsored by the governments of the Fourth Republic from Miraflores.
