The deputy of the Congress of Spain, Gabriel Rufián, this Tuesday called Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo and the Popular Party (PP) “hypocritical” for their position on the situation in Venezuela and their insistence on the recognition of former far-right candidate Edmundo González Urrutia as “elected president” of the South American nation, despite the fact that the country's institutions have already ratified the victory of the head of state, Nicolás Maduro, in the elections of last July 28.
During his speech at the session, Rufián refuted the 10 points presented by Álvarez de Toledo, in which he defends the actions of the Venezuelan extreme right based on the arguments of the supposed electoral “minutes” from which González Urrutia himself, who was recently granted political asylum in the European country, dissociates himself.
“I think that all those of us who have been here for a few years now, the truth is that we are tired of this music from the right wing and Venezuela, but it's serious and I have listened carefully to Mrs. Álvarez de Toledo (...) and you have stated here 10 points for which this man, the extreme right and he is the least, but the extreme right Edmundo González because he has to be the president of Venezuela because you say so a little”, began the deputy.
In this regard, he criticized the fact that the deputy spoke of how sacred the sovereignty of the People is, with respect to Venezuela. “Man, the Catalans would have loved to see him on October 1, we would have saved a lot of wafers and sticks,” he said.
In reference to the alleged similarities between Palestine and the Venezuelan extreme right, as expressed by Cayetana, Rufián stated that “the comparison is not supported anywhere” and when referring to a “humanitarian catastrophe” in the South American country, he stressed that “we could talk about the degrees of exclusion and precariousness and child poverty in countries” of which the Spanish right wing boasts.
“But you talk about a humanitarian catastrophe in Venezuela and instead you say that 50,000 African children are a threat, not a white one, of course, they are a threat,” he rebutted.
The deputy indicated that they can reject President Maduro, “but make room in this country for all the Venezuelan ultra coup opposition as you are doing, people who support Trump, people who have been to VOX events, then they will complain that these people are campaigning to try to drive them out of power. And, ladies and gentlemen of the Popular Party, when you arrive here, come here and say openly that you are so against the supposed Venezuelan dictatorship that they ask Repsol to stop buying oil from Maduro, I will believe you, in the meantime you are hypocrites,” he concluded.
