This Tuesday, the president of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, announced the official recognition of Palestine as a State and pointed out that the measure was taken out of the “need” to “achieve peace” between Palestinians and Israelis.

Through an institutional declaration outside the Palacio de la Moncloa, seat of the Executive Branch, in Madrid, the president informed that “at today's meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Government of Spain will approve the official recognition of the State of Palestine”.

Spain will thus join the more than 140 countries that already recognize Palestine as a State in the world,” said the ruler of the Iberian country.

Likewise, Sánchez stressed that “this is a historic decision that has a single objective, which is to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace.”

In this regard, he declared that the State of Palestine must be viable with the West Bank and Gaza connected by a corridor and with East Jerusalem as its capital and unified under the legitimate Government of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).
