This Saturday hundreds of people took to the streets of Valencia, Spain, in a march to demand the resignation of the president of the Valencian Community, Carlos Mazón, and demand political responsibility for the “negligent management” of the crisis caused by the torrential rains of DANA, which devastated 75 municipalities in the area.
According to information from RT, the demonstration was silent as a sign of respect for the more than two hundred fatalities of the natural disaster. In addition, at least 48 social and trade union entities united under the slogan “Mazón resignation”.
In addition, the
organizers of the protests argued that the tragedy was
“avoidable” and criticize the policies introduced by the
local government during this legislature, because they seem to have “forgotten climate change”.
“The Valencian
Government, with President Mazón at the helm and as the most
responsible, has demonstrated a serious lack of capacity and efficiency to
manage any type of crisis. In this case, he had a response
more than 12 hours late, which, in part, caused greater misfortune in the face of
this meteorological catastrophe. An ineffective forecast and late management, which we
now see replicated in Castelló,” he said in a statement quoted by local media.
For his part,
Mazón, in statements to the press, said on the same day that the
tragic consequences were caused by the unpredictability of weather
events and once again attributed the delays in the warnings to the Jucar Hydrographic Confederation.
According to the Government of Spain, the last death toll caused by the devastating DANA amounted to 220 people. Meanwhile, it is reported that a total of 36,721 people were rescued.
