On June 9, 1941, the South American Football Confederation declared South American Football Day, in honor of Uruguay's victory against Switzerland in the final of the 1924 Olympic Games.

The Uruguayan national team was the only South American country to participate in the Olympics, scoring 3-0 to win the championship, a historic event that established the ball on foot in the region.
