At least 25 people lost their lives on Tuesday because of the sinking of a ship in the territory of Inongo, capital of the province of Mai-Ndombe, in western Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities said.
According to information highlighted by Telesur, this is the fourth shipwreck that occurred this year in the province of Mai-Ndombe, an area that relies on river transport.
Previously, nearly 80 people lost their lives in October when another overloaded boat plunged into Lake Kivu, in the country's eastern region.
The commissioner of the Inongo River, David Kalemba, explained that the shipwreck was caused by “roof level overload”, according to a provisional balance of victims, as there are dozens of missing individuals.
