On October 14, 2014, the Venezuelan journalist and former director of the Vea newspaper, Servando García Ponce, died at 91 years of age.

During the governments of Eleazar López Contreras, Marcos Pérez Jiménez, Raúl Leoni and Rómulo Betancourt, Servando García Ponce was subjected to torture and imprisonment, for expressing his left-wing ideals, denouncing the reality of the Venezuelan people and being an active fighter against the Fourth Republic.

With more than 70 years of professional experience, the legendary journalist, together with his brother, Guillermo García Ponce, who died in September 2010, founded the Diario Vea in 2003, with the purpose of creating a progressive media that promotes socialism, peace and the independence of the nation, to counteract the media encirclement of the revolutionary process and to be at the service of the Venezuelan people.

García Ponce leaves a legacy for Vene Zuela's combative and militant journalism.
