- On September 23, 1993, the 27-year-old cultural and sports leader Sergio Rodríguez Jansen was assassinated by agents of the Caracas Metropolitan Police (PM). He was a vigilante and a history student at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV).
- Sergio Rodríguez “El Flaco” died at Vargas Hospital, after being seriously injured on the corner of El Chorro. He was fatally shot in the right intercostal region.
- The third month of the transitional government of Ramón J. Velázquez passed, when this student and worker committed to the Bolivarian cause was shot and killed.
- Another 23 people were shot and wounded during demonstrations to protest for a fair budget for Higher Education and the freedom of the military defendants from 4F and 27N, including two cameramen. There were hundreds of detainees and 60 missing as of the date of this news.
- That day, Caracas was besieged by the Armed Forces. The Army cordoned off urban and suburban roads to “avoid disorder” for thousands of people who came out to demonstrate peacefully.
- This ill-advised government action degenerated into real urban chaos, as access routes to the city were closed. Kilometres of cars blocked the Centro Regional Highway via Caracas.
- Yadira Pirela de Rodríguez, wife of the assassinated leader, stated: “Sergio paid with his life the price of being a social and cultural leader on January 23, because he was deliberately murdered, that was not an accidental event (Latest News, 23/9/93)”. He also stated that Sergio Rodríguez was under constant surveillance, and was executed by a PM agent, due to his association with the Bolivarian Revolutionary Movement 200 (MBR-200) and his sporting, cultural and political activities on January 23.
- Rodríguez Jansen played an outstanding role during the events of February 4 (4F) and November 27 (27N) in 1992. As a member of the New Man Cultural Group, he brought his revolutionary message to many sectors during meetings all over Venezuela.
