The governor of the state of Mérida, Jehyson Guzmán, announced this Wednesday the start of the second phase of the operation to protect the “La Corona” glacier on Humboldt Peak in the Andean state.

The actions are carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Popular Power for Ecosocialism (MINEC), through its regional director, Toro Belisario; and agencies of the entity's security and rescue bodies.

“The second stage consists of deploying personnel to the camps in the mountains, analyzing the flight areas and preparing the hauling and transferring the geotextile material to the Alberto Carnevali airport,” Guzmán reported on his account on the social network X.

In this regard, he stressed that these actions will provide the Glacier with the necessary protection to allow it to extend its natural life.

Last December, the MINEC detailed the purchase of a batch of 35 rolls of thermal mantles that will be placed on the surface of the glacier with the intention of extending its life.

The mantles are composed of a reflective polyester and polypropylene fiber to increase a glacier's ability to reflect sunlight, evade heat and generate a microtemperature.
