Russian leaders welcomed Azerbaijan's aspiration to cooperate with the BRICS, which defend the interests of the global majority. This was stated by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at a briefing.
According to the official, quoted by the news portal Telesur, Moscow tried to involve like-minded States, including Azerbaijan, in the group's work as much as possible during the Russian presidency of the said organization in 2024.
“Last year, Azerbaijan was included in the expanded list of countries that expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with the association. The doors of the BRICS are still open. The priority is to increase effectiveness and consolidate the expanded strategic partnership of the BRICS,” said Zajárova.
The diplomat recalled that the decision to fully participate in the group is made on the basis of extensive consultation and consensus. Baku's desire to become a member of the BRICS is reflected in the joint statement on the establishment of strategic cooperation between Azerbaijan and China.
The document was approved in early July 2024 at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Astana. In August of the same year, it was reported that the Republic had submitted an official application to join the association. In addition, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, attended the BRICS Summit in Kazan, which took place from October 22 to 24, 2024.
