Russia will respond to any attempt by Western countries to confiscate Russian property and assets abroad, the Eurasian country's Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

“We have said on more than one occasion that the unilateral coercive measures adopted by Western countries against Russian overseas assets are illegal. We have repeatedly pointed out that the confiscation of the assets of the Russian Federation is illegal and violates the basic principles and norms of international law, including the equal sovereignty of States,” the ministry said, according to what was published by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

In this regard, the ministry added that such actions are “a flagrant usurpation of sovereign real estate and a banal and blatant theft by a group of States of the property of another”.

“At the same time, countries of the “collective West” can be sure that any attempt to confiscate Russian real estate, as well as other assets, will inevitably involve an adequate and effective response,” the ministry said.
